Happy Birthday Singapore

Today is Singapore's 43rd birthday and there are big celebrations and fireworks down at the waterfront. People are very patriotic and the Singapore flag is flying from both public buildings and private dwellings.

Merlion from the river cruise

Last evening we enjoyed a Singapore River cruise, a meal at a local food market (Newton circus). Newton circus food hawkers covered a large area with at least 100+ outlets all selling ethnic food. Everyone was seat outdoors. We were besieged by hawkers all trying to get us to eat at their outlet, very competitive. We chose satay sticks and Jenny tried the local delicacy of sugarcane juice.

Sentosa Monorail

Today we took a trip by monorail to Sentosa Island. As it is a public holiday the local people were there in their thousands, it was stinking hot! Sentosa Island is very lush and green with lovely beaches and various attractions to tempt the visitors out of their money. We took a couple of free bus rides around the island and came home via the cable car. The cable car is very high above the harbour and also has very long spans between the supporting pillars. This allowed for a considerable amount of movement while suspended.

Our time in Singapore is coming to an end as we fly out to London this evening departing at 10.55pm, a 13 or so hours flight. We imagine that we will find the temperature very different when we arrive in London
