Now that December is upon us, the calendar is starting to fill up fast with Christmas get-togethers of the various clubs and groups we are involved with. Today was the last meeting of the year for our Combined Probus Club, and the scene was set with Christmas decorations over the stage, and our President and Secretary decked out in Santa hats.
Messages were read, future trips were explained, and those celebration birthdays this month were given a little parcel of locally made Liquorice Allsorts. We were entertained by club member Alice who recited several poems, the most memorable being the Pam Ayers poem about a little boy who gave his teddy a haircut, and all his stuffing started falling out!
After morning tea, the very talented Alice was back to entertain us again, this time with her piano accordion. We joined her singing songs from the war, interspersed with various jokes and funny stories. And it wouldn’t be a Christmas meeting without singing all the special Christmas songs, from Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, Away in the Manger, to Silent Night.
The adjacent restaurant brought our Christmas Dinner out into the hall, and we queued up to collect our plates of hot ham, roast turkey, vegetables and gravy – just delicious. Someone on our table commented that we didn’t need any dessert after that big meal but that didn’t stop everyone from collecting a plate full of Christmas pudding and custard, apple pie and cream, and topping it off with a slice of the biggest pavlova we had ever seen. We may not have needed it, but we all managed to eat it!
After such a big mid day lunch, we all waddled home. Some mentioned that they just might need an afternoon nap – but not us, we are not nearly old enough for that sort of carry on. It was a great morning, and always nice to catch up with other members.
