Happy New Year – Karaoke Camper Style

New Year’s Eve had rolled around and here at Carterton Motor Camp Pete and Di like to put on a little entertainment for their campers.  Tony and Pearl set up their karaoke machine and got the ball rolling and belted out a few songs.  “Look through the song book, and write your name down”, we were exhorted.  Oh dear, we don’t really want to get up and sing!

Pete and Tony sung several songs, then the campers slowly got braver (probably as they quaffed an ale or two)  and one by one they took the microphone.  Willy Nelson put in an appearance and sung a reasonable version of Seven Spanish Angels.  Then Kathryn and Dot decided they would sing if they could do it in sitting at the table, and I joined them making a trio.  I’m sure our version of the Jim Reeves classic “He’ll Have to Go” wasn’t too bad, especially as we could read all the words on the screen.

With all the campers tapping their toes and joining in the chorus of each song, our inhibitions slowly dropped away.  Derek decided to do his version of “Candle in the Wind”, with Dot giving moral support and singing along with him.

While some of the ladies got up and danced, Kathryn and I sung “Dancing Queen”.  Like most songs, the chorus was so much easier to sing than the verses.  Here we are looking up at the words on the screen.

Even Robin decided to give it a go and sung along lustily.  He really enjoyed “Living next door to Alice”, especially with a slight change of words.

It was a fun way to see out the Old Year, and welcome in the New Year.  At midnight all the campers made a circle and sung the obligatory “Auld Lang Syne”, and we wished each other well for the New Year.  The evening was completed with a short fireworks display, and we toddled off with our hoarse voices to our respective caravans.  Thanks so much, Pete and Di, for such a fun night.
