We have been having intermittent problems with our caravan hot water heater when it is running on gas. But no problem at all when heated by power, luckily. But with another “Safari Trip” coming up fast, and our planned itinerary involving staying at some off-power sites, this problem wasn’t going away by itself and needed to be dealt with. Any fix-it-up problems seem to involve Robin kneeling or lying on the ground, and sure enough, this one did too.
The instruction manual for our Atwood Water Heater told us that spiders, wasps and other insects can build nests in the burner tube. (Ugh, ladies, keep well away). If the colour of the flame has changed from blue to yellowish tones, this indicates a blockage. The advice was to pull it all apart and run a flexible wire brush down the burner tube. As Murphy’s Law always goes, we didn’t have a suitable brush, so this meant a hurried trip to the hardware store.
No insect nests were found, thank goodness, but the mountings needed adjustment and just for good luck ran the new bottle brush through the tube to ensure there was no unseen blockage. Success – the water heater now works correctly when running on gas.
