We are not the only caravan club in residence at Himitangi Beach Holiday Park. Seven vans from our club, Heretaunga Caravan Club are here for the three day holiday weekend, the Wellington Anniversary Weekend. The weather is fine and blustery, but the wind is to be expected so close to the coast.
Our friends from the Wairarapa Caravan Club are also staying at the motor camp over the weekend, and we joined them for 4zees sitting outside in the sunshine. We share some friendly rivalry with this club, and always have a good time when we meet up.
This was a special weekend for our club, as we were celebrating the grand total of 500 rallies. Founder members Peter and Elaine cut the cake, which was kindly baked by Eileen. Club funds provided several bottles of bubbly and we raised our glasses and toasted each other. May we all attend many more rallies together.
Club members were asked to put their thinking caps on and reminisce about the very first rally they attended with the Heretaunga club. Peter and Elaine started the ball rolling with their tale of how Heretaunga Caravan Club was formed in June 1974. Other members then shared their early memories of the club. It was very interesting remembering long forgotten members who had moved away or passed on, motor camps we had stayed at, and the fun things which had happened over the years.
Our own story went like this: While attending a National Rally back in 1987 in Tauranga with our former caravan club, we were parked up on site next to several very friendly couples. This was our first National and they really made us welcome, inviting us to join them as they sat outside in the sunshine. We discovered that these people were also from the Wellington Region, but belonged to a different caravan club. They were such good fun and very welcoming so then and there we decided to change clubs when we returned home, as we were a little disillusioned with our current club. Our very first rally with the Heretaunga Caravan Club took place in Paekakariki in 1987 and to date we have attended 306 club rallies all told.
