No visit to Southern Taranaki is complete without a trip to to famous Yarrow Bakery in Manaia – the town which markets itself as the Bread Capital. Two carloads of us drove the 26km round trip to sample some of Yarrow Bakery's delights.
The shop was full of customers all ready for a bargain or two. We were spoilt for choice. Christmas mince pies were going for a song, as were loaves of bread, biscuits and pastries. With our purchases made and loaded into the car, us girls took a few photos while Robin and Derek sat on the back of the car, patiently waiting for us to finish.
Just a short way out of town was the site of the original Manaia flour mill, a wooden structure four stories high, with storage for 15,000 sacks of flour. This was replaced by a concrete building in 1900. Across the road the Manaia Brewery used the unwanted grain for brewing. Only the concrete base of the flour mill remains, with no sign of all of the brewery building.
The little town of Manaia has an interesting history, and we intend to spend more time exploring this area on another trip. And have another visit to the bakery too, of course!
