Replacing the Bulkhead

Over the gas bottle on our caravan is a fibreglass cover, the manufacturer has used a bulkhead inspection port for access to the gas tap.  Who would have known that – I always thought that a inspection ports was something found on a boat.  But no, it seems we have two, and one of them needed replacing.  It had discoloured and cracked, so that was no good at all, it had to go.

Robin travelled down to Burnsco’s new shop  at the Seaview Marina in Lower Hutt.  Burnsco specialise in RV and boating accessories (I knew it was something to do with boats) and purchased the new cover.  It was a different brand to the old one but as luck would have it, the screws holes were in the same positions, which made things so much easier.

He used the handy fold down tailgate of his 4WD as a mobile workshop, it was just the right height to hold his tools.

With the new bulkhead screwed in place, and a dab of silicone over the screw heads to keep them watertight and look tidy, the job was almost done.  Then the hood was replaced, and everything tightened up.  What a difference the new cover makes, it is bright and shiny, and so much easier to open up to get at the controls of the gas bottle. The lower inspection at the bottom by the red tank is to access the fill point for the diesel heater fuel tank.
