Our Sunday outing with our SLG friends started off with a Dedication Ceremony at Waikanae Cemetery to our friend Tom. Tom’s ashes have recently been interred, and his loved companion Trish wanted to mark this occasion with a few words. Trish had found a few precious blooms of Tom’s favourite rose, Dublin Bay, in her garden and placed them in the container above his headstone. We reminisced about Tom and his wonderful Irish humour, and reflected on what he meant to us as the “Elder Statesman” of our Super Leisure Group. Trish then planted a pretty azalea “Happy Days” in his memory. It was a lovely peaceful start to the day out with our friends.
Next stop was to “Melts” for lunch. This Waikanae cafe is relatively new and most of us had not been here before. It was nice and roomy and there was no trouble accommodating the eleven of us in the busy lunchtime rush. We needed warming up after being out in the cold wind so most of us decided on a hearty cooked lunch. Plenty of choice for everyone, Robin chose pork snitzel and I ordered lambs fry and bacon. Not usually a meal I make at home, so now and again if I find it on the menu, I will order it when we are out.

We then started the 30km drive over the Akatarawa Road from Waikanae to Upper Hutt. This narrow road winds through bush clad scenery and drivers must watch out for oncoming cars hurtling around the sharp corners towards them.
We stopped at the top of the hill to admire the wonderful view looking out over Waikanae and the coast. Then it was back into the car and we were soon on our way once more. Next stop - “Efil Doog”.
