Mowhanau Camp has been a very busy place, with all power sites taken over the long Easter break. A great variety of caravans, campers and tents are dotted around, and all the on site cabins are occupied. It is great to see so many family groups enjoying the camping life, and the little kids have been busy all day riding their trikes. Bigger kids, teenagers and dads wander down to the beach with their fishing rods and boogie boards, some walking the short distance, while others jump aboard the essential dune buggy.
As usual, there are always a couple of caravans which catch our eye dotted around the camp. “Room with a View” came complete with bikes, gazebo, and a large dog.
And we loved the look of this little maroon and white painted treasure, complete with hula hoops, hot pink flamingos, and a sign stating “Glamper Girls Caravanning and Camping Club”.
The camp owners have hauled a Totara stump from the beach after it had fallen from the cliff in 2008 and it is now on display in the driveway. The timber has been carbon dated and is aged 8800 years.
Robin took the easy way out when he loaded up two toilet cassettes (ours and Don’s) on the tail gate on the back of our 4WD. The dump station was quite a walk away, so it was easier than lugging the heavy cassettes all that way.
After that short little car trip down to the camp dump station, our Landcruiser refused to start when it was time to hook up and continue on our holiday. Geoff came to the rescue with his spare battery, the jumper leads were attached, and then the car turned over. Off we went, next stop Manaia
