Back in Blenheim

It was goodbye to historic Canvastown this morning after spending the night in a paddock at the back of the pub.  Robin enjoyed a couple of hours in the bar last night with the regulars watching a rugby game on the big screen.  Trout Hotel is so named as the the area is very popular with trout fishermen.

Driving up SH6 on the way to Blenheim we were soon in wine country.  Three months earlier when we passed by, the vines were full of fruit and ready for harvesting.  Today the leaves are drying and dropping off and the vines are getting ready to hibernate over winter.  It looks like we have just about come full circle on our trip - each day I carefully mark the route we have travelled and today the lines joined up, now we are back in Blenheim.

I rather fancied staying at the “Riverlands Roadhouse Truck Stop and Diner” for a change, that certainly sounds different.  There are plenty of power sites available for caravans and motor homes, as well as toilets, showers and a laundry.  After parking on wet soggy grass for a while, it is good to be on hard standing and not to worry about traipsing mud over the caravan carpet for the next few days.  Truckies come and park up here in their own area, catch up with their sleep, have a shower and scoff big truck sized meals at the diner, which is open 24 hours a day.

We are off to the diner ourselves for our evening meal – roast pork is on the menu, I’ve been told.  It’s Mother’s Day here in New Zealand so I surely deserve a night off from cooking duties.  And if I’m really lucky my two offspring might even give their dear old Mum a call tonight.  Robin has done his duty and rung his Mum who is being taken out to the pictures (movies) by his brother and family.
