I had been really looking forward to my visit to Linton, also know as the Giant’s House. Gardener, artist and creator Josie Martin relocated to Akaroa, and discovered pieces of broken crockery when she turned the soil over. She tried her hand at mosaics and plastered the pieces onto the front steps. The rest, as they say, is history.
The whole garden is beautifully landscaped, terraced, and planted with colour and edged with neatly clipped low hedges. Everything seems larger than life, as the eyes take in one mosaic wonder after another.
Terracotta steps set with colourful stones lead up skywards, surely this must be something like the “Stairway to Heaven”. I just couldn’t resist sitting in this celestial seat in the arms of an angel.
Everywhere you look there is something quite different. Oh look, isn’t that Adam, Eve and that pesky snake?
Even the toilet was a work of art. Mosaics covered the floor, as to be expected, and patrons were invited to leave a message on the walls with pens provided. (I did!)
Feel free to leave a message on the walls
The toilet ceiling was resplendent with a pink chandelier and was covered all over with fancy ceramic shoes.
Mosaic work on the Giant’s House is still a work in progress, I noticed one corner of the garden which is being worked on. Sooner or later Josie will run out of grounds to plaster with broken pieces of pottery, and then what will she do, I wonder?
