Te Rewa Rewa Bridge – a New Plymouth Icon

Te Rewa Rewa bridge is a thing of beauty to my eyes, the beautiful white open design just takes your breath away.  It is a pedestrian and cycleway bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River at New Plymouth, and the spectacular shape and setting make it a popular landmark.  The designer, Peter Mulqueen wanted to achieve a bridge with a "harmonious and dignified character”.  His design is reminiscent of both a breaking wave and a whale skeleton, and represents the relationship between the land, sea and wind.  The tied arch bridge has a clear span of almost 70 metres and is part of the award-winning New Plymouth Coastal Walkway.

The skies were dark and stormy but we were not the only visitors here to admire the bridge and walk across it.  Cyclists whizzed across the bridge as they continued on their way along the cycleway.  We heard a clanking noise underneath and spotted a couple of men on a pull-along gurney hanging underneath the bridge.  They must have been doing an inspection, we supposed.

The bad weather had brought in a huge amount of seabirds to shelter on the shore.  The sandy spit and the river banks were a mass of black backed gulls and terns, all gathered together in a large, noisy group.
