Then on the way back home I splurged and flew back to Wellington. When I read the beginning of your post I thought "I don't remember a lake?" It wasn't there in 67! I do remember it being a long journey from Waiouru. The 'rattler' 2nd class to Wellington and then the ferry to Littleton. Boat train to Christchurch and then the slow train to Dunedin. A day in Dunedin and then the late afternoon train to Cromwell.
