Easter at sunny Hastings

We both took Thursday off work to drive up to sunny Hastings, to attend the New Zealand Motor Caravan National Easter Rally. We journeyed the 300kms over the Rimutaka Ranges, through the farmland of Wairarapa and into southern Hawke’s Bay. We always make a stop at Woodville to visit the little local bakery which makes the most delicious Eccles Cakes. Across the road is the Cheese Cake shop, one of their small ones will suit us nicely for dessert for dinner. We bought a frozen Kailua and Chocolate cheesecake, and put it away in the freezer for later consumption.

Sited at the Hastings Show grounds, most of the 900 expected motor homes and caravans were already in place when we arrived mid afternoon. We had asked for a power site as Robin needs to use a machine at night because of his Sleep Apnoea condition. He was horrified to be given a brightly coloured notice to display on our arrival. We were directed over to the Special Needs area.

It was well set up with a power distribution point supplying power to a dozen campers, and there were several of these areas within close proximity of the halls and ablution blocks. Each time a new arrival was connected to power, a volunteer came along with a shovel to bury the power cord beneath the turf to minimise accidental trip ups. We went to the hall to register, collected our goodie bags, and settled down to digest the information contained inside. Also included were Hot Cross Bun and Easter eggs, not completely unexpected as it is Easter, after all. And those crunchy new seasons apples included tasted so nice and fresh.

The marquee was full for the evening concert put on by “Double Divas”. (However, they were joined by a local guest singer for the evening, making it Treble Divas). They marched around the marquee in military uniforms then kept us entertained with all the old favourite songs from the War era. The audience joined in with old favourites like Lily Marlene and The White Cliffs of Dover. After the interval, the girls changed their uniforms for a bit of glitz and glamour and belted out all manner of songs from Abba to the Bee Gees and all sorts in-between. Their show was fun and dynamic with people getting up and dancing while the songs kept coming.

The “Double Divas”plus one more on stage

It was a great start to the rally weekend and there is plenty more high quality entertainment on the programme.
